ESS (European Spallation Source) – procurement and implementation of a new ERP system

Challenge:

ESS is a planned multi-disciplinary research center based on the world’s most powerful neutron source. ESS is financed and operated by a partnership of 17 European countries.
When ESS started up in 2010 they procured a simpler business system. To meet the rapid and complex pace of expansion a new ERP system was required in 2012, that manages human resources, procurement and finance.

Assignment:

Lead the procurement of a new ERP system and implement the same.

Approach:

ESS is growing fast so the focus was on clarifying and developing business processes and define the target scenario and vision. Context and dependencies were described and communicated early between different parties and units within the ESS

Result:

  • Clear and appropriate process descriptions for HR, purchasing and finance
  • Requirements capture and the definition and implementation of the ERP procurement process with the qualification and tender process
  • Implementation of ERP in three phases: finance, HR and procurement
